Having to spend most of his youthful summers in his hometown in Italy, it is unquestionable how Michael Canzian remains a Friulano at heart. Friuli Venezia Giulia’s beautiful mountain sceneries and crystal clear lakes will truly captivate people’s hearts. Its abundant castles embody the rich history of its previous inhabitants–making it an unforgettable place that anyone would want to keep coming back to and a memory that they’d want to keep reliving. This region is abundant with diverse cultures given that it borders Austria and Slovenia. Michael Canzian has been blessed with the opportunity to make the most of his hometown from spending time with his family and friends over local food to savoring the natural beauty it offers.
Gorizia
The province of Gorizia is known for its complex culture–a beautiful blend of Italian, Austrian, and Balkan influences. A place that also held the most brutal battles of World War I. With its grandeur comes its turbulent past that still remains within the community. A way to honor this is by admiring the gems that the city offers. Piazza Della Vittoria is the main square of Gorizia that is easily recognized through its colorful buildings. It also has a variety of restaurants and shops where people can relax. Furthermore, Saint Ignatius Church is located in this area– known as the most important church in the city as it is renowned for being unscathed during the World War. Built in the 1680s by the Jesuits, its intriguing exterior and six side chapels with varying sculptures are not ones to miss.
Forni di Sopra
A town and commune in the province of Udine, it is the main mountain tourist center of Friuli Venezia Giulia and recognized for its “alpine beauty.” It made its way to the list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage for its spectacular dolomites that serve as its identity. A place also known for the Queen of Dolomites is perfect for family getaways considering that it has 13 kilometers of skiing areas that range from beginner-friendly to professional slopes. Aside from that, there are adventure parks, biking trails, and trekking trails where people can embrace their sporty and outgoing nature.
Cividale del Friuli
Another popular destination located in the province of Udine, situated on the slopes of the Eastern Hills of Friuli is Cividale del Friuli. It is built on the Natisone river which makes it truly alluring. This place was conquered by the Lombards in the 6th century A.D and declared it as their bulwark. Ancient buildings and elegant monuments are all over the town, one of which is the Longobard Tempietto built over the Natisone river and draws the attention and amazement of many.
La Sorgente del Gorgazzo
The source of Gorgazzo, a fascinating underwater cave located in Polcenigo. It consists of a resurgence, one of the deepest ever explored in the world and the second deepest karst spring with a siphon in Europe after the Spring of Valchiusa in Provence. Beyond its crystal clear waters, its beautiful landscape will definitely captivate anyone’s heart. Indeed, it is not just divers who have explored the depths of the basin, but it has also been painted by many artists–describing it as the “delight and torment of many painters” due to its varying blue colors.
The Miramare Castle in Trieste
This elegant castle in Trieste will definitely be on the “must see” list. In fact, it may already be on every Friuli Venezia Giulia tourist’s list. Built for Archduke Maximilian during the 1850s as a luxurious residence for him and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. Characterized by the “white towers” described by Carducci, rather than a castle it is an example of a nineteenth-century prince residence, the result of the eclectic architectural style of that period. This castle includes 20 rooms, among which are Maximilian’s and Charlotte’s chambers, the throne room, and the music room. Not to mention, this gem is surrounded by a large park and at the same time, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste–a classic that is impossible to miss when in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
This explains how Michael Canzian naturally admires rich history and food. It is an interconnection of culture that holds meaning and values identity. Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region that may remind people of World War I but it also stands as a homage–an embodiment of true Italian roots that honors their family and community. Hence, when in this region, make sure to visit these beautiful destinations that will keep you coming back for more.
