Non-profits are organizations that aim to function with a specific higher purpose rather than focusing on the need for profitability solely. Charities focus on a specific mission that tend to improve the conditions of a particular community.
Michael Canzian has several nonprofit organizations that he continually advocates for including the Junior Diabetes Foundation, Colonial Williamsburg, Woodward Academy Foundation, Atlanta Girls School, Alzheimers.org, Childhood Cancer, American Cancer Society, Public Television, and Fernbank Elementary Foundation. These organizations tend to focus on the health and learning needs of children. He is aware that these nonprofits require financial assistance and the funding necessary to carry out their missions on a daily basis to effect positive change for the people and communities these organizations serve.
Donating to such organizations comes with the belief that the needs of these communities can in some cases only be served through outside donors It is an act of service that starts from inspiration–believing and contributing to a community that you want to support. Hence, it is important to choose a nonprofit that you feel connected to in order to donate not just money, but also your time purely for the desire to help others. While this is an act of selfless contribution, it also benefits you in certain ways.
Making an impact
By supporting a nonprofit organization, you are able to make an impact. A small amount of money can go a long way to assisting organizations meet their annual operational and strategic goals. Imagine if every person donates a dollar, and the amount of goodwill and benefit that can ensue where otherwise help would not be available to those in need.
Some nonprofits hold events in order to fund their research. The Junior Diabetes Foundation has events such as walks, bicycle rides, marathons, galas, golfs, games, etc. to support type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Their innovative research has two core objectives; “to cure by restoring the body’s ability to make insulin and stopping T1D before it occurs or providing insulin independence through replacement with insulin-producing cells” and “to improve lives by keeping people with T1D as healthy as possible until cures are found by advancing new T1D resources, technologies, and therapies.”
Any form of help–may it be by donating or joining one of their events- will mean that you are part of the solution.
Creating a better world
Everyone wants a world without poverty, disease, and crime. Despite the differences that exist, everyone simply wants to live in a world where there is peace and unity. Each community or even individual has a domino effect that affects the general public.
People need to be aware of the fact that there is a correlation between poverty and crime. Those unemployed or who live in low-income households have double the rates of violent victimization than those who live in high-income households. They are left without a choice or voice, and sometimes they resort to crime.
There are various factors that contribute to poverty such as inadequate access to basic needs, unemployment, conflict, equality, lack of education, and poor healthcare. To put it into perspective, education leads to opportunities that support an individual’s needs for the future which increases the chances of landing a better job that can sustain their living. Woodward Academy Foundation, Atlanta Girls School, and Fernbank Elementary Foundation have a mission of providing quality education for those who need further assistance without such financial support, the quality education for those in need or less fortunate may not exist.
A better world can be realized when we all work together.
Spreading justice and awareness
The act of giving is accompanied by a sense of awareness. You recognize that there is a need to contribute. You recognize that there is disparity in certain communities or countries. If you are born in a developed country, you would most likely have more access to better education, employment opportunities, and living standards as compared to those born in underdeveloped countries. This is the reason why they choose to migrate to countries that could provide a better chance at life.
By donating to nonprofits that help the needy, you are providing them a chance to have a quality life. When you advocate for these nonprofits, you are also spreading awareness to other people that they are capable of social sustainability.
Donating to Alzheimer’s Association, World Child Cancer, or American Cancer Society will allow other people to perceive the importance of healthcare services. For Alzheimer’s, the “costs for formal care average $27,672 per patient annually, with long-term care being the costliest component. Annual costs for informal care are estimated to be $10,400 to $34,517 per patient.” On the other hand, for those with cancer, “newly approved cancer drugs cost an average of $10,000 per month, with some as high as $30,000 per month.” Treating these diseases requires a tremendous amount of financial assistance.
Setting an example
By advocating for nonprofit organizations, you are also teaching the people around you to do their part. Lead by example. You will be an inspiration for them to recognize the important missions that exist in an effort to help those in need. . You may also be able to influence your children to feel the responsibility for helping others and making a positive impact on the world. At an early age, they will be able to perceive that they have an important role to play in every setting.
More donations or contributions will allow charities to have more funds in supporting their cause. You may also host your own charitable event in order to set an example that each can do their small parts in sustaining a better community or world.
